Francesco Rosi's 1960 movie SALVATORE GIULIANO, starring Frank Wolff, deserves to be much-better known as a classic throwback to the Neo-Realist movement. Unfortunately, young enthusiasts of Italian movies watch only a diet of so-called gialli, horror movies, Westerns, crime movies and sex films.

In the last category comes Joe D'Amato, most prolific and best-known (alongside Tinto Brass) of the Italian pornographers. His phony riff on Rosi, titled DON SALVATORE: THE LAST SICILIAN, is just another insult from his voluminous bag of tricks.

It was made in August 1996 (not the erroneous 1995 IMDb date) back-to-back with another stinker, THE LEOPARD, a lame take-off on Visconti. This time SG is a Sicilian bandit from Montenegro, personified by big-dicked, broken-nosed Hakan Serbes.

His right hand-man is Valentino as Spano (would that they'd hired Vincent Spano from Hollywood), and the two carry neat rifles when they aren't shtupping every girl on the Island.

Lame plot line has duo kidnapping the wealthy British husband of the local baroness, after servicing said lady in their patented tag-team double-penetration style. A minor rebellion against the government is in progress, but all D'Amato cares about is humping.

Ultimately Salvatore marries the lovely Giovanna (Cindy Scorsese, as always I must remind "not related to..."), and the wedding cues an orgy in which Valentino gets to shtup the baroness again.

Along the way they have taken time out to have sex with the baroness's beautiful servant Nicoletta (played by Nicolette, a wonderful Cyndi Lauper-lookalike -from the neck up- in D'Amato's porn troupe), and Hakan's leading lady from THE LEOPARD, winsome Monica Orsini, is uninhibited in this movie as Rosa.

As before, chief fetish is the women all having sex wearing thick stockings, a sop to the movie's period setting. Bad English dubbing doesn't help make it watchable.

Considering the subject matter of this film (an unsuccessful bookstore is turned into a thriving sex shop), it's funny how this video starts with a long complaint about censorship in the USA which is followed by the surgeon Generals' accepted guidelines for Safe Sex by VCA Pictures (this last part is amusing because of all the extra-marital sex in the picture).

Amanda (Ashlyn Gere) has to sign some documents for her lawyer but finds her bookstore still doesn't generate enough money to get through the month. Then he proposes she starts selling pornography instead. Note that he gives her a couple of magazines (the dirty books of the title) for perusal, but she ends up branching out into videos and sex toys the moment she opens the shop. The magazines turn Amanda on to such an extend that she gets right down on her knees to thank her barrister for his suggestion. She also explains that her hubby Todd (Mike Horner) only feels the urge for sex on Saturdays and Tuesdays, as if that makes everything alright.

That evening in bed she scolds Todd for never selling one of his scripts. And even though it's Tuesday, she refuses to indulge him. Wait a minute, if today is Tuesday, couldn't Amanda have waited a few hours longer? Oh well, a week later her bookstore has been renamed "Center City Books & Novelties" to Todd's dismay. First customer Tiffany Million steps into the previews booth with a tape and a couple of dildo's to has some solo fun. Some time later Todd calls Amanda and wants to make it up to her hard. His words manage to arouse his wife enough for her to rush home, leaving Tiffy still enjoying herself in the booth. Back at home they go at it but Todd objects when Amanda introduces some of Doc Johnson's toys into the bedroom. Will they ever see eye to eye in the bedroom again?

Ona Zee is signing videos at the store as "Vanessa Zanora", the 'biggest star in adult films'. After Amanda introduces the actress to her husband, Vanessa asks Todd if he's ever done any collaborating on scripts. She's got an idea for a mainstream script about a classically trained pole dancer and asks him for some help. While Todd is being seduced by candle lover Vanessa at her place, Amanda hires a blond cashier. This girl, Diane, claims to be doing research for her book on 'Human sexuality in the Nineties'. Naturally her research includes thanking Amanda carnally for the job. Meanwhile, having likewise persuades Todd to listen to her story pitch, Vanessa tells him to be faithful to Amanda in the future. All the characters in this picture speak in contradictions and useless exposition. They should have let Todd look over the script if he's such a good writer. Anyway, as he returns home, his wife and Diane are still busy with each other and insist he joins them for a threesome.

But that turns out to be just what the doctor ordered to get Amanda & Todd's love live back on track: trying out new experiences. With business booming for both of them and a busier love life than ever, we leave the couple happy and satisfied in each others arms.

As McCord gets to interviewing witnesses about this strange girl � we find that she�s a sort of ethereal sex-therapist that finds people in need of sexual help, and is more than �helpful�. We hear stories of a couple who Susan advises to have the wife bone her brother to fix the problem! And another girl who needs help with her first lesbian experience. McCord realizes that Susan doesn�t want to be found, and gives up the search, suggesting that all of those �touched� by Susan�s helping� uh� hand � get together for an orgy. Sounds like a good idea to me�.

Another "Dan McCord" XXX-Mystery...

DIRTY SUSAN is an above-average sleaze-fest in terms of the 70's/80's NYC porn scene. The girls are a little hotter and the sex is a little better than some previous entries. The storyline is a little less involved than other McCord mystery entries that I've seen (which was a little disappointing...) but the strong sex scenes balanced it out.

This one has McCord on the trail of a mysterious girl named Susan that seems to come and go through people's lives when they are having sexual problems. Just so happens that this "Susan" is the same girl who ended up in McCord's bed just that very morning. As McCord gets to interviewing witnesses about this strange girl - we find that she's a sort of ethereal sex-therapist of sorts that finds people in need of sexual help, and is more than "helpful". We hear stories of a couple who Susan advises to have the wife bone her brother to fix the problem (?!?!?) and another girl who needs help with her first lesbo experience. McCord realizes that if Susan doesn't want to be found, and gives up the search, in turn suggesting that all of those "touched" by Susan's helping...uh...hand - get together for an orgy. Sounds like a good idea to me....

Again, the story in DIRTY SUSAN is pretty weak, comparatively speaking, and doesn't make a whole lot of sense - but you'll be too busy reachin' for the tissues to worry too much about it. If you dig this one, I also recommend SLAVE OF PLEASURE - another Dan McCord mystery with a better storyline and some hard S&M action towards the end of the film...7/10
