Sinopsis:
1952. Bill Rohan, de 18 años, pasa su vida soñando en la casa de su familia, a orillas del río, a la espera de ser llamado a filas por dos años por el servicio militar obligatorio. Cada mañana, Bill nada en el río y suspira por una bella muchacha que pasea en bicicleta a través de los caminos cercanos al río. Ese idilio se romperá ante la dura realidad del campo de entrenamiento. Allí se encontrará con Percy, un bromista amoral, y juntos trazarán la caída del sargento Bradley, su incesante torturador. Percy y Bill son rivales y antagonistas, pero poco a poco forjarán una profunda amistad.
